Friends Forever
You can call it fate or a Divine plan but over 50 children have come into our care over the last ten years. They walk around the base in Halmahera hand-in-hand or arms around each other’s neck. There are others riding bikes, sitting together, reading books or playing a game. Moses, Joshua and Yohanas who came to our base around the same time have become very close friends. These three are like brothers and even sleep in the same bedroom since they arrived as infants. They go to school together, eat every meal together and play together. Then there is Tison and Jek—they are total opposites. Tison is flashy, vocal — a leader. Jek is quiet and a follower. They like to be together and seem to be enjoying each other. Cathy, Listari and Anna are buddy’s. This is more difficult to understand because Anna and Cathy are strong leaders. Listari is quiet and in awe of her two leader friends. Then there is Tessa. She is a leader of the pack. She has some unique qualities of kindness and compassion. She usually has several friends within reach and tries to find some treats or games to play. Tessa seems to know where chocolate is hidden and will find it and share it with her crew. I love watching her in action.
Who knows if they will be friends for life? I do know that each one of these circles of friendship are important. They share each day and each chapter of their life. Their future is bright and it is a blessing to know they are safe and happy. There is a lot of laughter around the base.
