The Children are Learning!
Voices filled every corner of the room as each class sang to the visitors. This is the second year of the Hohidiai School and it is so amazing to hear the students singing in English. The preschoolers are doing hand motions to the songs and singing with loud voices–the school is doing well.
The bright eyes and smiles are so encouraging. We have seen good progress over the last year. All the children have progressed. Children who were struggling with their reading are now reading well. The four classrooms are orderly and the rooms are filled with posters and the colorful artwork of the children.
Viktor is in grade one. He is a very special little boy. He came into our care when he was seven months old and weighed only seven pounds. He was a very sick child and was covered from head to toe with sores. Viktor made a full recovery and has been a permanent part of the base. He is “all boy” and spends his share of time coming up with dumb ideas that usually end in a crash or some tears. He has plenty of scars who testify to his “not-so-good” ideas. Viktor is a leader. His small troop of followers are not far behind him. They also bear plenty of scars where they believe in Viktor. His latest experiments are bicycle crashes. Viktor is sweet. He doesn’t do things to hurt himself or his friends on purpose but he is always thinking about what would be fun to do—-unfortunately most of his ideas do not end well. He will learn as he grows up. Viktor is also smart. He proudly showed me that he could read and write. It takes a special teacher to keep him on task and he does spend his share of time in “time-out”.
After school the children do their homework, or stay to read books and play games. The hunger to learn is so evident in many of these little ones. Thanks to the vision and hard work of the School staff. The children are so blessed to have this good learning environment.
